History of Fairbanks at the Pioneer Park

We kept on postponing our visit to the Pioneer Park because we thought it would not be our cup of tea. For the Belgian nationals, you could compare it a bit with Bokrijk. It displays replicas of typical houses when the city was founded and a real historical train and boat.

The train car is the Presidential wagon of President Harding, who used this train for a trip through the USA in 1923. The president could not finish his journey because he died that same year while he was travelling. It is amazing we are standing now in the same train couch. This should be seen as the predecessor of Airforce One.

We also visited the house of James Wickersham. A travelling judge who was ruling with a moving court through Alaska. He was one of the Pioneers of the State and member of the Congress. The guide in the house gave us a real insight to his life.

The whole Pioneer Park is a top attraction to visit. It shows you the real history of Alaska and with nice weather it is also an enjoyable walk. The entry to the park is free of charge.

  4. Wonderful local museum. Looks almost the same as I has imagined Alaska to this day as well (which is not true)
